Royal Palace – Yellow Staircase

The Yellow Staircase was designed as the monumental main entrance to the apartment of the Bavarian king on the main floor of the Königsbau (Royal Palace). It takes its name from the polished stucco marble cladding the walls, which imitates a precious yellow stone (giallo antico) that was prized by rulers of the ancient world.

The two female figures framing the portal personify justice and perseverance, the motto of King Ludwig I who had the staircase built.

Severely damaged in the Second World War, the room was reconstructed largely in its original form from 2017 to 2021.
